Given the situation on the ground in Syria, Acumen decided to discontinue its operations as of the end of April 2011. We will remain closed until the situation improves.

Sniff test: Our client produces fragrances used in detergents and all-purpose cleaners. To help the client understand consumer preferences and customize the product offering for the Syrian market, we are conducting a product test using focus group discussions and in-home visits.

Residential property development: Acumen is currently working on a full feasibility study for a residential property development outside Aleppo. Our task includes conducting the concept test and demand assessment as well as the investment appraisal.

Telecoms market: Since late last year, GSM operators have been busy preparing for the entry of the third operator into the Syrian market. We have been conducting a number of surveys at the consumer and retail levels aimed at determining each operator’s points of strengths and weakness. These surveys will help operators develop their product offerings and develop strategies aimed at consolidating their market positions to cope with the anticipated changes in the market structure.

Medical research: We have recently completed a survey designed to understand how doctors in Syria diagnose and treat a rare type of cancer.

Acumen has delivered the findings of the second edition of Syria Banking Monitor, its syndicated tracking study of bank usage and attitudes. The survey covers the Syrian population’s usage of retail banking services and people’s attitudes towards banks and banking in general. The 2010 edition of Syria Banking Monitor built upon the 2009 results to begin creating a time series of data to monitor the development of key indicators relevant to the Syrian retail banking sector.

The 2010 edition surveyed a sample of 2900 respondents in urban areas nationwide in October/November 2010. The 2010 sample included 600 panelists from the 2009 survey.
